Why Meme Coins Exist
Meme coins did not appear from nowhere in 2021. They are the third act of a story that starts with internet forums, runs through commission-free trading apps, and ends with a token launch costing less than lunch.
Act one: the forum
Communities like r/WallStreetBets built a shared language around retail trading — self-deprecating, screenshot-driven, allergic to institutional seriousness. Individual moments became folklore, such as the trader whose anguished "GUH" on a livestreamed loss in 2019 turned into a permanent piece of the subculture. Losing became content, which made participating feel social rather than financial.
Act two: the app
Zero-commission mobile brokerages removed the friction and much of the ceremony from buying a stock. Millions of first-time investors arrived during the 2020 lockdowns. The style of those apps — bright, gamified, celebratory — became shorthand in memes for a certain kind of enthusiastic, under-informed trading, to the point that the app itself became a recurring punchline.
A note on names, because this academy is built on one: Robinhood Markets, Inc. is a real, regulated brokerage, and it is not connected to this site in any way. The folk figure of Robin Hood — redistribution, taking on the powerful, the outsider with a bow — is the older idea, and it is the one the memes are actually reaching for.
Act three: the launchpad
Then the cost of issuing a token collapsed. Launchpads made deploying a tradable token a two-minute, no-code, few-dollar action. Solana's Pump.fun proved the model; by 2026 equivalents existed on most chains, including Pons on Robinhood Chain. Supply became effectively infinite.
What a meme coin is honestly for
A meme coin generally has no product, no revenue and no cash flow. Its value comes from attention and from other people's expectation of attention. Some holders describe this as a bet on culture; some describe it as gambling with extra steps. Both descriptions fit, and the mechanism is identical either way.
You can find meme coins interesting, funny, or culturally significant. What you cannot do honestly is call buying one an investment thesis. Knowing which activity you are engaged in is the whole point of this course.
